(Be sure to check out our Manhattan Branch too!)
Our New York City branch missionaries have ministered to Jewish people in Brooklyn since our Manhattan branch first opened in the 1970s. It wasn't until January 2007, however, that we formally opened a Brooklyn Branch to have a more concerted ministry to the 500,000 Jewish people who live in this fastest growing borough. Our Brooklyn branch has a multi-faceted mission emphasis.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews : For perhaps the first time in modern missions' history, we conducted an outreach into the Hasidic (Ultra-Orthodox) Jewish community in the greater New York area as part of our "Behold Your God" campaign in New York City in 2006. We discovered that there were many in this growing community who were open and interested to learn more about Jesus and why Jews should believe in Him. We even saw a few profess faith in Him! Today we have a regular ministry to a few Hasidic Jewish believers and seekers, and periodic outreaches into the communities of Borough Park , Williamsburg and Crown Heights .
Russian-speaking Jews : Since the early 1990s, with the immigration of large numbers of Jewish people from the former Soviet Union , Jews for Jesus has sought a witness to this growing population in the Brighton Beach area of Brooklyn , a.k.a. "Little Odessa." This area has become so thoroughly populated with Russians that it might as well be called "BIG Odessa." We also look to reach the expanding population in Bensonhurst and Midwood. Today there are more Russian Jewish people here in Brooklyn than in Ukraine or even Russia . Our staff regularly hands out gospel literature on the streets, and conducts visits with many who are willing to learn more about Jesus. We also hold a weekly Shabbat service and special Jewish holiday services for the Russian-speaking Jewish community, and regularly partner with other ministries in the area for evangelism.
Unaffiliated Jews: A vast number of non-religious Jewish people live here in the Borough as well. Many were raised in 'mixed' faith homes, with one Jewish parent; many others were raised in Jewish homes but left the synagogues in their teens or early 20s when they left their parent's homes. Our Tuesday night Bible study has already begun to draw some of these Jewish people (as well as some from more religious backgrounds); our prayer is that we will grow into a community of witness to our Jewish people here.
College students and young adults: There are several colleges in Brooklyn with significant Jewish student bodies. Through fellowship meals, small group meetings, and one-on-one visits, our branch staff look to minister to the needs of these students. We try to help Jewish believers navigate college life while growing in their faith, and to meet unbelieving students who are seeking a real relationship with God. As well, we seek to have a ministry to graduate students and young professionals.
Special Events
Each month, on the third Saturday morning, we host a 'Shabbat Seminar' in downtown Brooklyn . A different holiday or topic of interest (e.g. Jewish understanding of the Scriptures, the Jewish roots of Pentecost (Shavuot)) is presented. All are welcome to join us to learn more about the Jewish roots of the Christian faith as well as gain a better understanding of Judaism today.
Each week our branch hosts two meetings for Jewish believers and those who want to know more about the Bible and our Jewish Messiah, Y'shua (Jesus). We have a Tuesday night Bible study for English speakers and a Saturday afternoon Shabbat service in the Russian language.
The Moskowitz home hosts a weekly Shabbat fellowship for students and young professionals (believers and unbelievers) centered around food, fellowship and the Word. The word has spread and believers have brought their unsaved friends. It's a blessing when one comes to faith through this place of fellowship.
We partner with the InterVarsity Club at Brooklyn College, lending our help in reaching the 30% Jewish student population on campus. We have held Jewish Evangelism seminars for the purpose of teaching the Christians to witness more effectively, as well as participating with the students in "Jesus Day" opportunities, having a table on campus.
Each spring, the branch also hosts a Passover banquet; in the fall, we host High Holy Day services for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. All of these programs are perfect opportunities for believers in Jesus and for Jewish seekers who care to know how faith in Messiah Jesus may be integrated with Jewish identity. Information about times, locations and reservations may be found at Jews for Jesus High Holiday Services .
Christian Resources
Gentile and Jewish believers in Y'shua will find helpful resources too. There are many ways to partner with our local ministry in prayer and short term outreach opportunities. We desire to serve the Body of Christ. Our staff are ready to help make Jesus available through appropriate and sensitive presentations of the gospel . Church Resources
Pastors, Chaplains and Mission Committee members have found our high quality, bible-based presentations to be stimulating programs for Church services, Sunday Schools, Bible College chapels and Mission Conferences. A sample of these resources can be found at Resources for Pastors . Or you may want to telephone directly to our branch Itinerary Coordinator, Mr. Kevin Smyth, at (212) 683-7077 .
All year round, our branch missionaries and volunteers can be found on the streets and in the subways, handing out Jews for Jesus broadsides (gospel tracts). And every year we have special outreaches at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the New Year's Rockin' Eve celebration in Times Square . A highlight of our outreach is an annual summer witnessing campaign, when Jewish believers from all around the world come to New York for a month of intensive street witnessing. These campaigns generate hundreds of contacts with Jewish people that our missionaries follow up on with phone calls and one-on-one visits throughout the year.
Our branch staff is available to people in all the boroughs, as well as parts of New Jersey , Connecticut and New York State . Our outreach is not limited to the literature you see us handing out: we visit Jewish seekers of all ages who are interested in seeing what the Bible has to say about knowing God and about Jesus. We also have personal Bible studies with Jewish believers who are looking to deepen their biblical understanding. We hold weekly gatherings as well as special events for believers and seekers to come together and celebrate holidays like Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah and Purim. (For more information, please call us.)
Currently three of our missionary staff in New York are Russian Jews, which provides us with a wonderful opportunity to communicate the gospel to the more than 100,000 Russian-speaking Jewish people who reside in Brooklyn and Queens.
We also provide internships for college age Jewish believers and an annual Halutzim program in conjunction with the Summer Witnessing Campaign.
Whether you are Jewish and want to know more about why we believe in Jesus, or whether you already believe and are looking for others who know what it means to be a Jew for Jesus, we hope you will copy the information to your right and look us up. Come study and celebrate with us from a Messianic perspective.*
For believers in Jesus: whether or not you are Jewish we would love to have you partner with us. We have a variety of opportunities available for volunteers, prayer partners and those who are otherwise interested in supporting our outreach to the greater New York area. We also offer inspiring and informative programs for local churches interested in reaching out to Jewish people.
*We can help with liturgy for messianic weddings, brises, naming ceremonies, bar mitzvahs, etc.
