Jose, "Jesus" comes via the Greek. Greek has no "sh" sound so "Yeshua" became "Iesous." That turns easily into the English "Jesus." Nothing to do with pagan gods.

Great study! Thank you. For busy people: a mini-summary can be found in www.trthndcptn.punt.nl in the log titled: 'Hïs Name: NOT Jesus'. He deserves to be called by his true name! In that weblog there is also a log titled 'GOD'S NAME: Not What Most Think'. Our God gave us His name Himself! He is not a secretive God who uses some kind of code name. He tells it like it is. And don't you DARE call me Polla! ;-)

In response to this article and also to Gerri (the last commenter posted) the use of “Yah”shua is entirely incorrect. Many people use it because it sounds to English speaking ears like Joshua, but in Hebrew this usage in is blasphemous! First, it isn’t even a word in Hebrew. Most people who use the term, even in Messianic communities prove themselves to have little or no real knowledge of the Hebrew language. It isn’t found even once in Scripture, but the real Name of our Master, "Yeshua" (עושי) is found 30 times in the Tanakh (29 times in Hebrew and once in Aramaic).

All this Yeshu vs Yeshua debate seems like a tempest in a teapot - we know that Father's name is YHWH/Yahhweh. Scripture tells us that the Savior came in his father's name - so it would appear that the debate - if there has to be one - should be between Yahshu vs Yahshua... or Yahushua.
Also the author used JHWH to represent Father's name - which is curious because there is no J in Hebrew (or Aramaic)??? Actually no J in English until the 1500's. Look it up!

Rudy, Reconcile with what? The folks who compiled the Talmud weren't believers in Jesus - and lived at a time when the Church was increasingly anti-Semitic - so should it be a surprise that they did not take a positive view of Jesus?
Best,

I am happy to find such a scholarly reference to one of many unanswered questions.
I have discovered many hidden clues by going back, as far as I am able, from english versions to vulgate, and been quite surprised.
I have only limited arabic, greek and latin reference materials and do appreciate the efforts of those who share their research and translation efforts.

Hi Hubert Luns,
Thanks for your comment. However, I am looking at the stanadard English translation of the Babylonian Talmud, in 32b per your comment, and see there that the reference to the circumcision is said to literally be the "week of the son." This in Hebrew would be shavua ha-ben, not yeshua ha-ben, which I have just confirmed by consulting a copy of the original. So the Hebrew is "the week of the son", since the circumcision is performed on the 8th day. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus, that is a mistake in someone's rendering of the Hebrew (or Aramaic).

There is an interesting reference in the Jewish pre-circumcision ceremony. This they call the ‘shalom zochor’ or “peace to the male child”, for the Talmud states (Niddah 31b): “If a boy is born peace comes into the world”. In Yiddish the ceremony is called ‘Vakhnacht’, derived from the Dutch «waaknacht» meaning night watch or vigil. In the old days it was called the ‘Yeshua ha-Ben’ or “Jesus the Son” ceremony (Sanhedrin 32b), which was traditionally held on the first Friday night after the birth of a son. The name Yeshua ha-Ben is not in use any more. When did they stop using it and did they stop using it because it referred too clearly to Jesus Son of God?
