To the Jew First': A Biblical Analysis of the 'Two-Covenant' Theory of the Atonement.

To the Jew First': A Biblical Analysis of the 'Two-Covenant' Theory of the Atonement.

The two-covenant theory has circulated for some years among non-evangelicals and even among some conservative Christians. If you've ever been told that Jews don't need Jesus because they "already have a covenant with God," then you are hearing this theory of salvation, which was developed by Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig early in this century. Gudel, a Lutheran pastor, summarizes the history of the theory and briefly surveys what Jewish and Christian proponents have written. Then he delves into a biblical analysis with an examination of passages such as Romans 1:16, 2:9, and Acts 13:46. He traces the missionary core of Christianity through Jesus, the apostles, and Paul. Gudel then suggests provocatively that promotion of the two-covenant theory is anti-Semitic. This article is lively and well-written, especially helpful if you've not heard of the two-covenant theory before now. An Introspective: A Review of Carol Harris-Shapiro's Messianic Judaism: A Rabbi's Journey through Religious Change in America

Anticipating attack, I geared myself up to read Messianic Judaism: A Rabbi's Journey Through Religious Change in America. Mentally, I steeled myself against what I thought was coming: a diatribe against the divinity of Messiah Y'shua, a lament over the loss of Jews to this "lie" called Messianic Judaism, or at the very least, criticism that would compel me to question what I believe and why I believe it. It was probably the last possibility that I feared the most.

Mission of Discovery: The Beginnings of Modern Jewish Evangelism: The Journal of Bonar and McCheyne's Mission of Inquiry.

In 1839 five Scottish clergymen set out on a "mission of discovery" that would have far-reaching consequences for Jewish evangelism. Among them were Andrew Bonar, the theologian and hymn-writer, and Robert Murray McCheyne, a young Hebrew scholar and preacher. Together they set off across the continent of Europe on a journey to Israel and back, traveling slowly by horse, carriage and on foot. Along the way they stopped to meet members of each Jewish community they encountered, discovering their conditions, offering them literature, and recording their findings.
