David Cohen slowly folded his note
to the Ancient of Days.
David is what they call a dreamer"
and only a dreamer would make
such a request.

Surely the Almighty's ears had heard
countless cries, yes, even demands
for the Messiah to be raised up
from the living ruins
of the city of King David.

David's twentieth-century plea,
stuffed deep in the cracks etched by time,
was added to the petitions of old men
who no longer expect an answer.
They hope a little, but their dreams stopped.

Dreams and visions of the One who will establish
the throne of David's kingdom forever.
The One of whom the LORD said,
"I will be his father, and he will be my son."*
The One of whom the LORD said,
"You are my Son, whom I love;
with you I am well pleased."**

White notes turn gray
Old men's hopes give way to
young men's dreams.
And in every generation
a David Cohen hopes
with all his heart.
