RICHARD NIXON, BILLY GRAHAM, AND JEWS FOR JESUS

June 26, 2009 The Rev. Billy Graham informed Richard Nixon of the Jewish community's concern about Jews for Jesus in a private telephone conversation in February 1973. Graham represented the group as being "set up all over the country," at a time when the organization was in its fledgling stage, with just a handful of workers. The 20-minute conversation, released on Tuesday as part of 154 hours of tape recordings from the Nixon White House, took place on February 21, 1973, the day Israeli jets…[ Full Article ]

Larry Norman, Coffee Shop Evangelist by Susan Perlman

Susan Perlman's tribute to the late Larry Norman. How a chance meeting with a selfless Christian star changed my life. Larry Norman was more than the "father of Christian rock" to me. He was a guy with a guitar slung on his back, who had a big heart for the lost — including a young Jewish girl who didn't even know she needed to find her Messiah. My first encounter with Larry was in the early '70s, with the Jesus Movement in its glory. I was walking down 47th Street and Broadway, in midtown Manhattan, on my lunch hour, when I noticed him. He was…[ Full Article ]

We’ve got some GOOD NEWS and some BAD NEWS for the holidays. . .

We’ve got some GOOD NEWS and some BAD NEWS for the holidays. . . OKAY, so you’ve heard that line before. But what if we told you that the good news we have for you is the best news you will hear in this life? And what if we told you that the bad news is the worst possible news you’d ever hear? Here’s the bad news: You have broken the law—God’s law. The Bible says: "The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; [There is]…[ Full Article ]

Media Make Much of Jews Believing in Jesus by Susan Perlman

Jews for Jesus and “the media” have a long history. We first put up handbills on the kiosks of San Francisco State University and the University of California Berkeley using the slogan “Jews for Jesus.” The national press confused the number of posters with the number of people and literally named our movement. Thank you, Time and Newsweek! Since then, media have always helped to amplify the message of Jewish people believing in Jesus. That was certainly the case for the grand finale of BYG in New York. We hoped to raise a million dollars to broadcast the gospel…[ Full Article ]

How Dare They Call Us Sinners? by Ruth Rosen

In a letter to the editor of JewishTimes.com, Baltimore resident Sarah J. Rosenbloom expressed chagrin that Jews for Jesus has the "gall" to suggest "we" (meaning the Jewish community) are sinners. More Interesting Coverage in the Jewish Press by Stephen Katz

Just before Passover the Jewish Bulletin mentioned us again in a front-page feature article. The subject was haggadot (service books for the Jewish Passover seder). The owners of all the local Jewish bookstores and other Jewish-owned bookstores were interviewed on the subject. Just a block away from "The Store" is a prominent bookstore called Cody's. In his interview in the Jewish Bulletin, owner Ira Steingroot boasted that Cody's had the world's largest Passover display and the best local haggadah selection. In describing the wide range of their haggadah inventory, he…[ Full Article ]
